Kaylin: An Update

My doktor switched me to methadone for my chronic pain.

Scary sounding, huh?

The thing is... it really seems to be helping! I started last week, taking 10mg 3x a day. No crazy side effects yet besides grogginess, but of course, it's too soon to tell. @__@

I already have more energy, and I suspect it's because I actually woke up PAIN FREE today.

Thanks methadone!

here's my hair 20 months post chemo:

An opportunity has been presented to me that would allow me to share my story, in intimate detail, with millions of people. Is this good? Will this benefit anyone? Is my life even interesting enough to share? Hm. If the answer to any of those is "yes", then I'll do it.

My brother is 26, and he was recently diagnosed with metastasized testicular cancer. Despite testicular cancer being the most common cancer for men 20-35, there really aren't a lot of resources out there for people his age who find themselves fighting this disease. I work in health journalism, which helps me translate some of the medical talk for my family, but I wish there was more that spoke directly to the people dealing with cancer and cancer treatment in a way that was both approachable and informative.

I think that if you have a way to tell your story that you're comfortable with, it would be of huge benefit -- not just to other people with cancer, but to their friends and family. I started following your blog because I thought it might help me understand what my brother is dealing with, because it's really hard for me to wrap my head around it. If I can understand him better, I can help him better.

Whatever you decide, you're brave for sharing this, and please know that people appreciate it. And every life has a story to tell, so don't devalue that.

Curious about your opportunity! Do it if it feels right, don't if it don't. That's what I always say. Or maybe I'll start saying that.

Nice to find your blog.

The answer to all of those is YES! If you are strong enough to take on the telling of the story it WILL help someone, somewhere, at some point in time.

And yes, thank Buddha for methadone, I remember it helped my grandmother quite a lot.

I can only parrot what everyone else has said. Do it if you feel up to it, but don't feel like you owe it to anyone. Just do it if its right for you.
I also just wanted to let you know that reading your blog has been an enormous help and comfort to me. I feel less alone. So, thanks and hang in there.

oooo how shiny and nice your new hair is! and your thyroidectomy scar looks great for how soon it is. How are you doing with the thyroid hormone levels? I had thyroid cancer and a thyroidectomy and it took me near two years to get on a proper level of thyroid hormones. Maybe you haven't gotten into all that and are on cytomel so you could do more RAI?

best to you! hugs!

Are you kidding me? Just your blog has touched so many lives, and has helped so much, and I know you didn't express everything because you can't. If you feel like you won't die spilling your guts, I say go for it. You and everything you've shared here and lj have helped me and quite a number of my friends. Thank you.
