book club

I'm blogging more because I have no one to talk to here.

spending my nights in quiet solitude, which is so refreshing after living at the beach house and never having a minute to myself.

finished Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther and collected poems

now starting the Bell Jar again... this is perhaps the 5th or 6th time I've read it (typical, right?). I figure it's fitting for a lonely summer in New York. The only other book I've read as many times (once a year practically) is Jens Peter Jacobson's "Neils Lyhne", although I think I've grown out of his idealism.

I didn't have the energy or concentration to read during treatment, which is partially why we wanted to make a comic book. It's easy on the chemo-brain :)

have you read anything good lately?

oh yeah... my birthday is in 2 days; I will be the ripe old age of 26.

If you haven't read it, I recommend Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. Also, since you're now a New Yorker!, read Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann.

jackie- I'm totally going to check out McCann's book, thanks!

Shaan- I happened upon werther while looking up an old goethe quote & of course I loved it. We have such similar tastes, you should make a requisite reading list for me...

a few weeks ago this girl whom i don't know that well and met only once like, last august, sent me a halfway-embarrassed and apologetic message on facebook soliciting a book recommendation; the previous night she had had a very random but jarring dream, in which i, dressed in all black and with an enormous afro, was holding her by the arms and demanding that she urgently read a certain book: "you have to read it, do you understand? you have to read it."

so yeah, you should try nabokov's "invitation to a beheading." the novel that is both a novel & a pilgrim's progress for weirdos.

Wish you all the BEST to your birthday!! hope you feel well.
about good reading,
I was not abble post chemotherapy read close to anything..
one day my sister's nices left me in hospital two books, Saint-Exupery's children book called The Little Prince and Saroyan's short novel Tracy's Tiger. I love both those books from this time.
(and sorry for my horrible English)

go to Otto's on 14th street if you ever miss CA. Go to Oslo (the one on Roebling), read travel mags. Eat at Aurora. And go to Foodswings in the PM on the weekend. A girl named Veronica works there. She's the loveliest. Don't listen to anyone...find the bar that makes you happy and go there. Go to Gorilla Coffee. Go to the Strand. Go to the McQueen exhibit every day until you can't stand it. Go to Metro Textiles for the cheapest fabric. Kashi is a sweetheart. Don't go to Pacific for trims unless you have to. Go to M & J. Sil is overpriced, but they have everything. GO TO MUJI on 38th (not MIJU). Elegant on 40th is a rip off, but swatching is good and hassle free. New York Central on 3rd (?) is the best art supply store. 6th ave and 13th st has an art store open late with tons of weird shit. Go to Rockaway Taco and the beach when you feel like you need a break. Take daytrips. Go to the Dia:Beacon. Barney's loves fashion students (if you need a job). So does J. Crew. Don't take any of it too seriously. Don't forget to breathe.
